Sometimes a lonesome feeling

It was a lovely day, cold and crisp, and if you wore wool and down or if you had fur , it was just right.  Walking through the park, the sun beamed through the clouds, and we ran, weaving in and out between the slim trunks of the bare saplings. I tossed the ball that maybe would have been returned by a small boy or girl if things were different, but a dog is playing the game with me this year.
There were fellow creatures - geese, ducks and other birds,  but none of our own kind. Beau wants me to be a playmate, but I will never run as fast or enjoy the snow and grass like he does. He will never share a  thoughtful conversation, no matter how intensely he gazes at me.  It is all right, we both are doing well and are thankful, but there is a melancholy to being apart from the mate, the parents,  the siblings, the children that are so numerous but so widespread.  I cannot imagine the heartache of families separated by wars, disasters, and human cruelty. There are more tomorrows, and  I hope that you my dear children and grandchildren know that I think of you many times a day and look yearningly to the days we spend together and share sweet moments of laughter, stories, and simply being near to each other.  I miss you all so much tonight.

An 88th Birthday Sonnet for Grammy

Courageous Blooms
A Sonnet for My Grandmother on her 88th Birthday

I see the diligent care that you take,
To adorn us with warmth, wonder and grace.
A love that blooms in the trials we have faced,
Showers gratefulness in the feats we make.

I read from my heart our stories we share.
Learning courage by the roar of the sea,
Notice how a splash has an effect on me,
You confer, “Go on, do great things out there.”

In reverent awe, we walk through gardens,
Seeing your beautiful smile, my heart soars,
In your comforting arms our family grows,
Just as our joy in adventure strengthens.

Grammy, I love you and you are really fun,
I am highly blessed to be your grandson.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Grammy

Today is your special day. I can't wait to celebrate it with you. As I reflect back on the many memories we have shared, the thing I remember the most is the joy you share with us every time we see you. You are special and my only wish is that I can follow your example and live life like you have, happy and full of love. We love you Grammy

Family Blessings

Grammy, we wish you the sweetest and most wonderful birthday ever.  Your appreciation of beauty, and goodness, your kindness and thoughtfulness bring strength to all of us. I hope that when I am 88 I am a lot like you.  I always think of you with respect and love. I know that you love each of my kids and the grandkids and I couldn’t ask for more. You consistently give  encouragement, good advice, help and concern for each of us.  Here’s to a good year ahead!! Yesterday I looked through all of the lovely cards you have sent us for the last few years, and was so blessed by all of the good wishes you gave to us along with one very cool story that you sent to Gary when you gave him the gift of a new bicycle.  If it is okay, I would love to share that with the others in the family. It is so good! We love you!!
